Last night NBN News revealed that the Cambridge Hotel had been purchased by Newcastle-based developer GWH.
The purchase comes after a failed proposal by French developer Link City Lodge to transform it into a 550-student housing complex.
New owners, GWH told NBN that it plans to preserve the buildingโs heritage-listed facade and maintain a hotel space on the ground floor, complete with food and beverage offerings.
The new venture will also retain the poker machines and hotel license, but unfortunately, there was no mention of live music or even retaining the iconic name from the developer in last night’s news story.
In addition to the Cambridge, GWH has also purchased neighbouring properties, including a four-site block and car park, with plans to create a mixed-use development featuring retail and cafรฉ spaces.
It’s bittersweet news for the venue that was once the epicentre of the city’s nightlife before it bid farewell to live music lovers in 2022.
