Newcastle’s Neighbourly Newy initiative has launched with a vibrant celebration of multiculturalism, marking the 10th anniversary of the city being declared a Refugee Welcome Zone.
Food, culture, inclusivity, diversity, and community are at the heart of the program, which kicked off at Newcastle Museum with the Community Chef Challenge.
The one-day festival brought together flavours and traditions from across the globe, featuring dishes from Afghan, Arabic, Indian and African cuisines.
Local women, many of whom have recently completed a Food Handling Certificate through Atwea College, showcased their culinary skills as part of their journey toward launching their own food businesses.
The program continues through June, with highlights including a Multicultural Services Expo at Wallsend Diggers Club on 28 May, Upstander Training sessions on 10 and 11 June at No. 2 Sportsground, and a Refugee Week celebration on 18 June at City Hall.
The City of Newcastle is also calling on locals to suggest initiatives that could be featured as part of Neighbourly Newy. Full event details are available on the City of Newcastle’s website.
