A seven-hectare site on the grounds of Morisset Hospital will become the home of a new cutting-edge sports facility.

The chosen site, located at the northern end of the Morisset Hospital complex, incorporates the existing bowling club and sports oval and offers direct access to the shores of Lake Macquarie, making it a prime location for land and water-based recreation activities.

The announcement marks the end of a five-year search to replace the much-missed Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre, which was abruptly closed in 2019.

The closure followed an independent review that flagged safety concerns due to the potential failure of the Eraring power station’s ash dam wall in the event of a major seismic event.

A key aspect of the new project is its emphasis on preserving the siteโ€™s cultural and historical significance. The land transfer from NSW Health to the Office of Sport ensures continued public access while safeguarding the heritage of the area.

Plans for the facility promise an ambitious blend of indoor and outdoor recreation spaces which includes provisions for water sports.

Construction is set to begin once health services at Morisset Hospital are relocated to the Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation Facility.
