Newcastle’s night-time economy will shine when the Great Southern Nights Gig Trails return in 2026, with Midtown Newcastle locked in as one of the state’s major walkable music hubs.
Across one huge evening, the trail will turn the CBD into a roaming live-music playground featuring the likes of Radio Free Alice, Horse, Benjamin Fraser-Mckenzie, Molly Poppinz, Ponzi Scheme, Spuz and heaps more.
Eleven venues will host everything from rooftop gigs to late-night sets, with karaoke rickshaw rides, a courtesy bus linking stops, and food and drink specials keeping the party moving through the precinct.
As part of a major statewide expansion featuring more than 110 additional gigs, the Gig Trails are designed as a choose-your-own-adventure experience. Music lovers can drift between bars, stumble upon pop-up sets and explore laneways and rooftops as they build their own soundtrack to the city.
The night also highlights the growing collaboration between local artists, venues and small businesses, all working to amplify Newcastle’s after-dark culture.
It places the city shoulder-to-shoulder with precincts such as Chippendale, Newtown/Enmore, and Port Kembla, underscoring Newcastle’s rising reputation as a destination for late-night creativity.
Across the Midtown trail, punters can expect a mix of live bands, DJs, emerging artists and eclectic after-hours happenings as the CBD comes alive. With venues offering their own curated lineups and atmospheres, no two journeys through the trail will look the same.
The Midtown Newcastle Gig Trail runs from 5pm Friday 1 May to 2am Saturday 2 May. Tickets for select venues, including King Street and The Koutetsu, are available now, with free registration open for the remaining trail stops.
