MAYELA MARCOS: From Mexico to Newcastle with the Imperial Russian Ballet Company

Mayela Marcos will be in Newcastle on 4 October with the Imperial Russian Ballet Company to present highlights from the world’s great ballets at the Civic Theatre. We spoke to her over the phone from New Zealand, and she’s buzzing to get to Australia.

“We can’t wait to arrive. Australia is so beautiful” she declares early in our interview.

The 25 year old dancer has been performing with the Imperial Russian Ballet Company for almost 4 year now, and says it’s a dream come true for a Mexican girl with big ambitions.

“When I was 16 or 17 I told my parents I wanted to move to Russia to study with the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. They thought I was crazy but i had a dream and I wanted to learn from the best”.

And learn she did! Mayela studied at the Bolshoi Ballet School for 3 years and after her  final exams she was awarded a Masters Degree by the academy which she described as “a huge honour”.

The Imperial Russian Ballet Company have performed this three-hour ballet extravaganza all around the world. The production consists of an eclectic mix ranging from the magnificent Don Quixote, to the hilarious Can Can Surprise and from the dramatic Bolero to Giselle and Dying Swan.

Tickets for the show are now on sale.
