Newcastle’s beloved Law on the Beach legal advice clinic is back for another summer, offering free and accessible legal help in the relaxed surrounds of Merewether Surf Club. Running throughout January and February, the initiative brings together law students from the University of Newcastle and lawyers from the Newcastle Legal Centre to provide a unique, casual approach to legal consultations.
Operating on a drop-in basis, the clinics aim to make seeking legal advice less intimidating, particularly for younger people who may not have the resources or confidence to navigate the legal system.
“Sometimes young people do not have the life experience or resources to stand up for themselves in a matter involving the law. We aim to change that by providing a casual setting to have that legal conversation.” former director of the University of Newcastle Legal Centre, Shaun McCarthy said.
Although the program primarily targets younger community members, its services are open to all. From traffic fines to employment discrimination and everything in between, no question or case is too small or too complex.
The next Law on the Beach session is happening 29 January at Merewether Surf Club. Head to newcastle.edu.au for all of the other dates.
