Luminous is back in Maitland this June, bringing a bigger program, a brand-new ice skating rink and two nights of dazzling winter entertainment to The Levee.
The popular winter solstice celebration will once again transform Central Maitland into a glowing playground of light, fire and immersive experiences.
What started as a fresh way to mark the shortest days of the year has quickly become one of the region’s most anticipated winter events, drawing families, friends and visitors into the heart of the city after dark.
This year’s headline addition is a pop-up ice skating rink at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, giving visitors the chance to lace up their skates and embrace the winter spirit.
The rink will operate across the weekend and add a whole new layer to the Luminous experience, with food, drinks and a relaxed atmosphere just a short stroll from the main festival precinct.
Throughout The Levee, visitors will encounter a series of interactive light installations, including the impressive Ice Cathedral, an immersive walk-through display inspired by frozen landscapes and icy architecture.
Illuminated arches and glowing overhead features will create a magical pathway through the city, while live music, roving performers and family-friendly activities add to the atmosphere.
Creative demonstrations will also take centre stage, with local artisans showcasing traditional skills including Raku pottery firing and glass sculpting.
Families can enjoy UV face painting, while food lovers can settle in with local flavours from food trucks and market stalls. Boydells on Bourke will return with boutique wines and sparkling beverages, offering a cosy spot to soak up the festival atmosphere.
Luminous will take place at The Levee from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, 19 June and 3pm to 8pm on Saturday, 20 June, with free entry on both days. The festival will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display at 8pm on Saturday night. More information is available via maitland.nsw.gov.au.
