Local videographer Shane Williams is a passionate Novocastrian. He has spent many hours capturing the city’s splendour as you can see in the photo above.

Now, Williams has released a video. Not only does it show off the beauty of Newcastle, it also makes a statement about the Supercars. And it ain’t pretty.

Williams says that he’s done this because “we need to do whatever we can help save the local businesses and residents from the devastating impacts of the Supercars event being held where it is.”

As we discussed in a recent article on Newcastle Live, our council soon has a major decision to make about signing Supercars up for another five years. You can read that article here.

About the councillor’s upcoming decision, Williams says, “I just believe the council should be held accountable for any decision that affects the city and I don’t believe we have the full story and facts of the real impacts it has. The same about the costs – they say $1.6 million but does that include all the road resurfacing, storage of the barricades etc. Does it factor in the losses that some businesses endure? Some more transparency on all this would be good.”

He goes further, stating, “I would love to know how our council puts a cost on people who are dealing with health and mobility issues, who are trapped in their homes and forced to deal with 140plus dB of relentless noise. And how many businesses, including doctors’ surgeries, psychologists and other professional services will stay in the city when they have to deal with 8-10 weeks of disruption and no parking for clients.”

Here at Newcastle Live, we encourage everybody to have their say, to express their opinions so the council have the most information possible upon which to base their decision. One of the comments on the article mentioned and linked above says, ”I hate the idea that the society I live in triumphs entertainment with corporate benefits over displacement of its vulnerable people”.

There are some passionate opinions out there and we want to provide a platform for all to have their say. Let us know what you think about Shane Williams’ video and the possibility of the Supercars 500 being held in Newcastle for the next five years.
