When it comes to larger-than-life performers, there are few who loom as large as the late, great David Bowie.
Born with the rather unassuming name of David Jones, Bowie went on to be regarded, quite rightly, as one of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th century and his death in 2016, after a battle with liver cancer, left a Ziggy Stardust-sized hole in the popular music landscape that will never be filled.
Thankfully Bowie’s legacy lives on through a formidable catalogue of music. Across an impressive 27 studio albums (including nine UK number ones) he has given us the likes of Rebel Rebel, Changes, Ashes To Ashes, Under Pressure, Space Oddity, Starman, Suffragette City, Let’s Dance, and about 100 playlists more.
It is that amazing body of work and Bowie’s larger-than-life persona that will be celebrated in a new show coming to the Civic Theatre next month.
We Can Be Heroes: The Music of Bowie Orchestrated is an unabashed tribute to the Thin White Duke that will see a 24-piece symphony orchestra, conducted by the great George Ellis take the audience on a musical journey that covers the entirety of the David Bowie songbook – from his 1967 self-titled album to his 2016 swansong Blackstar.
Of course, you can’t do a Bowie show without a decent frontman and this show has no less than four in the form of Church frontman Steve Kilbey, the amazing Jeff Duff (no stranger to the material thanks to his jaw-dropping shows Ziggy and Bowie Unzipped) vocal powerhouse iOTA and journeyman Sydney-based frontman Chris Cooke.
This show is almost required viewing for any Bowie fan and the perfect chance to experience those timeless songs as you’ve never heard them before!
We Can Be Heroes: The Music of Bowie Orchestrated is on at the Civic Theatre on Saturday 6 February. Head here for tickets.
