Former Gooch Palm Leroy Macqueen will make a welcome return to Newcastle in 2021, giving Novocastrians the first taste of his new solo outing.
Leroy will hit the Cambridge Hotel on Friday 22 January, kicking off a bit of a mini debut tour that will also take him to Sydney, Melbourne, and Woolongong.
While the Gooch Palms were known for their upbeat party punk vibe, Leroy is taking a bit of a different tact this time around – that of an alt-Western tinged balladeer.
Leroy has been wasting no time in warming up that beguiling baritone voice, taking to Facebook recently to post a series of covers done in inimitable Macqueen style.
For a great example, check out his stunning rendition of the Roy Orbison classic Crying below.
It’s been a relatively busy 2020 for Leroy who, earlier this year launched another side project dubbed LM Queen. and so far, that iteration has spawned tthe single The Saddest Man Alive.
For the Cambo show, however, Leroy promises an intimate evening of unreleased originals, stripped-back renditions of Goochie classics, and some of the covers that he has been posting to Facebook.
Speaking to NL in 2019, Leroy was quick to point out just how integral The Cambridge was in the Gooch Palms story.
“The Cambridge is really dear to our heart – Kat and I met there and I’ve been watching bands there for years,’ Leroy said.
“My guitar and Kat’s boots are actually hanging on the wall – they wanted to celebrate the fact that we sold out two nights at the sidebar, and it’s a huge honour for us.”
