Float Your Boat is set to light up Lake Macquarie once again, with illuminated vessels, glowing entertainment and a giant inflatable octopus bringing winter magic to the waterfront this June.

Returning for the winter solstice celebrations this weekend, the much-loved event will transform the lake into a moving display of colour and creativity as decorated boats cruise the waterways adorned with bright neon artworks and eye-catching light installations.

The annual spectacle has become one of the region’s most anticipated winter events, drawing thousands of visitors to the foreshore.

This year’s festivities extend well beyond the water, with dedicated live sites at Toronto and Warners Bay offering a packed program of free entertainment.

Families can expect live music, children’s activities, food trucks, fluorescent kayaks and a range of illuminated performers designed to keep crowds entertained throughout the evening.

Adding a new dimension to the event is the arrival of Curious Legends’ giant inflatable octopus, Goom. The larger-than-life roving puppet will mingle with crowds alongside a collection of illuminated ocean creatures, creating interactive encounters inspired by the marine life that calls Lake Macquarie home.

Designed to spark curiosity and connection, the glowing sea creatures will roam the live sites throughout the celebrations.

The main attraction remains the flotilla of creatively decorated boats competing for community votes in the Newcastle Permanent People’s Choice Award.

Three cash prizes will be awarded to the most popular displays, while the Mayor’s Choice Awards will recognise standout vessels across two size categories.

Organisers say the event continues to celebrate the creativity, community spirit and sense of fun that make Lake Macquarie unique.

Float Your Boat will take place across Lake Macquarie on Friday, 19 June and Saturday, 20 June, with live viewing sites at Toronto Foreshore and Warners Bay Foreshore. Find out more details and event updates at lakemac.com.au/floatyourboat.
