If there was one person qualified to guide burgeoning artists through the trials and tribulations of the music biz it would be Kristy James,
Since releasing her first EP at age 13, the Warners Bay-bred songwriter has played more shows than you’ve had got dinners, won a slew of accolades, and enjoyed elusive chart success (her 2017 album Raw hit number two on the ARIA country charts)
Now, Kristy wants to impart some pearls of wisdom she has picked up along the way to artists keen to forge a sustainable career in the music industry.
To that end, she has created Shape Music – an online portal dedicated to demystifying the “business” side of the industry.
“I’ve been in the industry for a really long time now and I have been consistently getting students and also other artists asking: ‘what do you do? How do you do it?’ I guess I realised that there are so many questions that are just not answered anywhere, especially in Australia, ” Kristy told Newcastle Live.
“I thought it would be a really good idea to take these questions and put them into courses that can be accessed online.
“I thought that if I could develop these courses with all of the knowledge that I have of what to do and what not to do, then that’s going to save people a lot of heartache. If you don’t do this stuff right it can be really heartbreaking.”
As an adjunct to the online courses, which are currently being finalised, Shape Music also offers a raft of free content including Kristy’s 5 Step Plan to Independent Artist Success – a 12-page guide that covers a music career from inception through to the recording and marketing processes.
Then there’s free podcast featuring Kristy and an eclectic range of industry professionals, that runs the gamut of the music biz from the ins and outs of the recording studio to effective use of social media.
Kristy has also set up a YouTube series called The 5 Minute Music Career offering bite-sized snippets of invaluable info for up and coming artists.
“I guess the one thing that would’ve been really handy for me to know when I started was that this is a business and I guess a lot of us because we are creative people, we often don’t like to think of it in those terms but just working on your art, these days, is just not enough,” she said.
“You really have to know a bit about everything in the industry and Shape Music aims to give artists a comprehensive plan to develop and grow a successful music career.”
While you would be forgiven for thinking that Kristy’s own artistry may’e taken a back seat while getting Shape Music off the ground, you’d be dead wrong.
This year alone, she has released two cracking singles – Here’s To Being Bad and Black Heart with another three due to drop before the anticipated November release of her next EP.
Oh and she’s also got a Christmas EP in the works as well as YET ANOTHER EP after that!
