Civic Theatre Newcastle is set to sparkle this December when Chookas Entertainment brings the award-winning Broadway smash Kinky Boots to the stage.
The high-energy production, which is currently in rehearsal, marks the company’s Civic Theatre debut, a significant milestone for the young and dynamic theatre group that has quickly become a force in Newcastle’s performing arts scene.
For the uninitiated, Kinky Boots is a Tony Award-winning musical, with music by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by acclaimed writer Harvey Fierstein.
At its heart, the musical follows Charlie Price, a reluctant heir to his father’s crumbling shoe factory, staring down financial ruin and an uncertain future. Enter Lola, a larger-than-life drag queen with killer style and a demand for heels that can handle more than just a catwalk. What begins as a desperate business deal explodes into a glitter-soaked revolution—one that flips the factory on its head and kicks down the doors on tradition, acceptance, and what it really means to walk your own path.
“Kinky Boots is more than just a musical- it’s a message of love, acceptance, and the power of being unapologetically yourself,” Chookas Entertainment’s Producer, Jody Miller said.
“This is a show with a whole lot of heart, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience the magic.”
The Newcastle production will showcase a vibrant cast led by Zac Smith as Charlie Price and Tyler Chapman as the dazzling Lola, with standout performances expected from Siddha Crossley as Lauren, Brynn Hulls as Nicola, and Chris Porters as Don.
Behind the scenes, direction comes from Maddie Watts, with assistant direction by Theo Williams, musical direction from Luke Baker, and choreography led by Jody Miller and Caitlin Maher. With bold dance numbers, glittering costumes, and powerhouse vocals, this production promises to be one of the city’s biggest theatrical events of 2025.
For Chookas Entertainment, who champion diversity within the city’s performing arts community, this production of Kinky Boots represents another step in its mission after the success of previous shows, including Legally Blonde, Heathers, Chicago, and Be More Chill.
