The revitalisation of Hunter Street is moving full steam ahead, with construction crews mobilising next week for the next phase of City of Newcastle’s East End Village project.

This third stage will focus on the stretch of Hunter Street between Thorn and Wolfe streets, and Wolfe Street between King and Scott streets.

The works will include fresh paving, upgraded footpaths and roadways, new stormwater infrastructure, and a continuation of the two-way cycleway along Hunter Street’s northern side.

Designed to replace the old Hunter Street Mall with a modernised version of a traditional high street, the project will also bring in new street lighting, furniture and extensive landscaping to improve walkability and accessibility in the precinct.

These upgrades aim to support boutique retail, outdoor dining, and a more pedestrian-friendly city centre.

The current works follow the completion of the second stage between Perkins and Brown streets, which reopened earlier this month with new trees, landscaping and upgraded utilities.

Stage one saw similar enhancements delivered around the block bordered by Hunter, Wolfe, King and Perkins streets.

With more than $16 million invested to date, the East End Village project is being rolled out in stages to reduce disruption for residents and businesses.

The phased approach also aligns with major private developments like those being undertaken by Iris Capital, ensuring a coordinated transformation of the precinct.

Planning is already underway for the remaining two stages. Construction on those final phases is expected to be delivered within the current Council term. Head to the project page for an in-depth look at the current stage.
