City of Newcastle will move forward with the extension of the separated cycleway along Hunter Street.
The decision, made in a council meeting last night, will see a cycleway constructed on both sides of Hunter Street between National Park Street, Newcastle West, and Ivy Street, Islington.
Upon completion, this dedicated 2km separated cycleway will weave its way from Islington through Tighes Hill and Hamilton, connecting these suburbs to the heart of the city.
Community feedback has played a pivotal role in propelling the initiative forward, with overwhelming support for the extension.
“Through our community engagement survey we found that 90 per cent of respondents support stage two of the Hunter Street project and they’re happy with improvements to the network in stage one, particularly with the focus on safety,” Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said.
“By continuing our investment in Newcastleโs cycleway infrastructure we hope to support making cycling play an even larger role within our transport mix.”
Detailed designs for stage two of the Hunter Street cycleway are slated for completion by April next year, with construction set to commence shortly after.
The expansion of the Hunter Street cycleway follows the recent council approval for cycleway improvements between Broadmeadow and Hamilton, as well as the green signal for the inaugural stage of the Jesmond Cycleway.
