Hunter Drama expands horizons with new locations and exciting programs

Hunter Drama has unveiled plans for expansion in 2024 with new locations, classes, productions, and a roster of new staff.

Since they kicked off in 2007, Hunter Drama has earned a reputation for excellence in drama education, offering a range of programs such as the Young Actors Program, Musical Theatre, Actors Company, Writer’s Lab, Improv, and a Pre-Diploma of Musical Theatre.

This year the local company operate across several venues in Islington, Broadmeadow, Singleton, Cessnock, Valentine, Morpeth, and Lakelands.

The expansion aims to make drama education more accessible and diverse across the Hunter region.

“The study of drama can be transformative, teaching skills that improve confidence and self-esteem, social connection and relationships, public speaking, empathy, creativity, and general communication skills,” Artistic Director, James Chapman said.

“Drama studies can change lives, we see it every day and it’s an incredibly rewarding part of our work – to see our young people shine, to watch them develop life skills that are directly transferable to any career, not just the performing arts.”

Matthew Harper has been appointed as the Head of Drama, with a focus on fostering creativity, collaboration, and confidence in young individuals.

Other new team members include Brooke Page, Studio Manager, with over 15 years of experience in teaching various dance forms, and Liane Morris, Media and Marketing Manager, contributing her expertise from the realms of arts marketing.

Alongside the expansion, Hunter Drama will also stage a number of productions to showcase the talents of their students.

From The Jungle Book in April to Game Night in December, each performance offers students a valuable platform to showcase their skills at prominent venues such as the Civic Theatre, Civic Playhouse, or the Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC).

The diversity of productions ensures that students get a well-rounded experience in various genres, enhancing their overall dramatic skills.

Hunter Drama enrolments are now open with term one beginning the week commencing 5 February 2024. Visit hunterdrama.com.au/courses to find out more.
