Hunter Drama is delivering a double hit of theatrical magic with Frozen JR. and The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical hitting the Playhouse in Newcastle this July and August.

The two productions will showcase the power company’s young performers and the strength of great storytelling, giving families, fantasy lovers, and musical theatre fans a real treat this winter.

Check out all the details below.

Frozen JR.

SEASON: 17 July – 2 August

The snow-dusted kingdom of Arendelle will touch down in Newcastle with a sparkling stage version of Disneyโ€™s animated blockbuster.

Directed by seasoned Newcastle performer and music teacher Luke Baker, the production features two full casts of young local talent taking on this epic story of sisterhood, identity, and magic.

Unlike many traditional fairytales, Frozen JR. steps away from the classic prince-rescue narrative. Instead, it places sisterly love and self-discovery at its core.

“This is my first chance to work on a production team with Hunter Drama, and I am thrilled,” Director Luke Baker said.

“The students are already inspiring me with their dedication and talent. With two strong casts, weโ€™re telling this familiar story in a fresh and heartfelt wayโ€”with a little theatrical magic of our own.”

Audiences can expect a faithful adaptation packed with fan-favourite songs like Let It Go and Do You Want to Build a Snowman?, elevated by vibrant choreography from Vanessa Ambrose and rich musical direction by Rachel Davies.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

SEASON: 7 – 16 August

Just as Elsa and Anna exit the stage, another storm will arrive when Hunter Drama shifts gears with The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. Based on Rick Riordanโ€™s bestselling novel, this high-octane musical fuses Greek mythology with teen rebellion and rock music in a theatrical spectacle led by a powerhouse creative team and cast of rising young stars.

At the helm is award-winning director Lauren Harvey, whose previous hits with Hunter Drama include School of Rock, Seussical, and Oliver!. Known for her bold choreography and creative staging, she promises a production thatโ€™s fast, funny, and full of heart.

“This show has it all โ€” action, heart, humour, magic โ€” and weโ€™re bringing some big ideas and fast-paced energy to The Playhouse,” Lauren said.

The show follows Percy Jackson, a teenager with ADHD and dyslexia, who discovers heโ€™s the demigod son of Poseidon. After being accused of stealing Zeusโ€™s lightning bolt, Percy is launched into a monster-filled quest to clear his name and prevent divine chaos. With a killer rock score and quick-paced story, The Lightning Thief is more than a musicalโ€”itโ€™s an all-out mythological adventure.

Musical direction comes from Marty Worrall, a Newcastle stage veteran and vocal coach with credits on The Voice Australia and an impressive theatre rรฉsumรฉ.

“Itโ€™s a fun, action-packed theatre experience full of great songs, an epic journey, and real heart. Oh โ€” and monsters. There are monsters,” Marty said.

A Stage for the Next Generation

Both productions are powered by Hunter Dramaโ€™s commitment to nurturing young talent. With experienced creative teams and a passion for education, these shows arenโ€™t just entertainmentโ€”theyโ€™re platforms for the next generation of performers, directors, and theatre-makers.

Whether youโ€™re after the heart and magic of Frozen JR. or the electrifying mythology of The Lightning Thief, this winter season at the Playhouse is stacked with reasons to head to the theatre.

Donโ€™t miss this chance to see local talent light up the stage in two unforgettable productions.
