Hot find of the day: Dave Wells ‘Run Free’

Another day, another incredible local artist producing incredible local music. No stranger to the music industry, singer/songwriter Dave Wells is a phenomenal folk artist from the Hunter Valley. He makes honest, down to earth music, and his latest single ‘Run Free’ is no exception.

There’s more than just the notion of creative inspiration behind Dave’s latest offering however, as ‘Run Free’ was initially intended as an almost a living breathing farewell letter to a friend relocating oversees. “It was kind of a reassurance to him, a reminder really that you’re doing the right thing, that he was making the right decision”, Dave comments. But those familiar with Dave’s work, know there’s always a lot more brewing below the surface. “There are other aspects of it that I hope people receive from it, as is the case with most of my songs, you can really interpret it in many different ways. It’s really about listening to your calling and just doing whatever you can to make it happen, despite some of the social entrapments that we have”.

With this in mind, ‘Run Free’ really pays homage to that sense of escapism, that I think, at one time or another, we’ve all found ourselves faced with. The notion of perhaps searching for our rightful place in the world, or facing our fears head on, diving in to the mystery of the unknown.

Musically, of course, the song is yet another a beautiful folk offering. Dave’s vocals are layered delicately across the acoustic arrangement, and from the very first listen ‘Run Free’ was literally music to my ears.

Keen to hear more from the Hunter Valley’s favourite troubadour? Dave is currently working on mixing and mastering his debut album, and if this lead single is anything to go by, it’s sure to impress on all accounts.
