Wallsend District Library will celebrate 10 years of service to the community with a fun program of entertaining activities this month.

The celebration will feature a range of free events including a special birthday edition of Stories Come Alive, a Historical Wallsend discussion by local historians Greg and Sylvia Ray and birthday cake cutting by Newcastle’s Lord Mayor.

“More than 2.2 million people have visited the library and borrowed around 5 million items since the building opened in 2006,” Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

“The Library allows the community to build connections, access information and a range of other free resources and public programs and events.

“Earlier this year, we installed a solar system on the roof to decrease the library’s reliance on grid-generated energy usage. This will save around $15,000 annually in electricity costs.”

As part of the anniversary, the Library will also host the Biggest Morning Tea with gold coins to support Cancer Council and complimentary cakes and sandwiches from local food outlets Naomi Cakes and Earl of Sandwich Shoppe.

A Saturday Family Fun Day featuring a gymbaROO, cupcake decorating station, photo booth, Tech Savvy Workshop and other entertainment will top off the celebrations.

The launch event on Wednesday 18 May will be hosted by Newcastle Region Library Manager Suzie Gately and feature an official cake cutting by Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes.

“Wallsend Library offers a vibrant and inclusive space for the community to share, learn and relax,” Ms Gately said.

“The community has embraced the space and we continue to receive a great deal of positive feedback about the building and the services offered by staff.”

All members of the community are invited to take part in the celebrations.
