First you watch your mother slowly fade away from dementia.  But she’s not just any mum, she’s the feisty ex-wife of Prime Minister Bob Hawke. Then you get cancer and have your own battle for life to fight. How much can one person take?  How do you get up every morning and gear up for the challenges life throws at you? That’s the story author Sue Pieters-Hawke will be sharing with us as the keynote speaker for the Grieve Project Live Reading, 27 August at the Newcastle Conservatorium.

“The “interesting” part of the last two years has been cancer…. being diagnosed, receiving treatment, researching and implementing a raft of lifestyle changes, and all the obstacles and learnings along the way,” said Sue. “You could say that the ‘bonus gift’ has been that the cancer was successfully treated, and that I can look forward to a healthier future than if I’d never received – or been encouraged to listen to – the ‘wake up call’.”

Sue is the bestselling author of “Hazel’s Journey” and “Hazel: My Mother’s Story,” as well as the national ambassador for Alzheimer’s Australia. Fearless and gutsy, Sue is an inspiration to women and men everywhere. If you’ve only ever seen her speak on TV, here’s your chance to meet her in person!

The Grieve Project is a national writing competition sponsored by Hunter Writers Centre.  There will be a live reading of some of the winning pieces, a chance to vote for The People’s Choice Award and a launch of the 2016 anthology. Please note:  Gold coin donation, but please reserve seats at http://www.hunterwriterscentre.org/grieve-project.html
