Internationally acclaimed contemporary circus production Wolf is heading to Newcastle, with the global hit announced as the latest addition to this year’s New Annual festival program.

Fresh from acclaimed performances at the Edinburgh Fringe and record-breaking seasons across Europe, Wolf will make its Newcastle debut with two performances at the Civic Theatre this October.

Created by renowned Australian contemporary circus company Circa, the production combines breathtaking acrobatics, theatre, dance and music in a high-energy performance that has already captivated audiences in 12 countries.

The announcement marks Circa’s return to New Annual after the company’s sold-out 2023 performances transformed Christ Church Cathedral into one of the festival’s most memorable venues.

This time, audiences can expect an intense and visually stunning production featuring 10 performers who climb, leap, balance and collide in a display of extraordinary athleticism and raw physicality.

Premiering in Germany in 2024, Wolf has only been performed once before in Australia, with two sold-out Brisbane shows last year.

The production has been described as an emotionally powerful experience that pushes the boundaries of contemporary circus, delivering relentless choreography, primal energy and breathtaking feats that blur the lines between movement, storytelling and spectacle.

The announcement is another major addition to New Annual’s 2026 program, which promises a mix of international artists alongside local talent.

Previously revealed highlights include a new exhibition by former Newcastle photographer Damien Frost, the immersive Twisted art party at Bartholomew’s, the return of the free SOAK sunset music sessions at Newcastle Ocean Baths and an extended season of Loca Vida at Civic Park’s Spiegeltent. The full festival program will be unveiled on 31 July.

Wolf will be presented at Newcastle Civic Theatre on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October as part of New Annual, which runs from 25 September to 4 October. More festival information will be available ahead of the full program launch later this month.
