Glenn A Baker’s comprehensive music archive is set to be auctioned off at the end of the month.
The archive features over 80,000 items, including vinyl records, CDs, magazines, and other memorabilia.
“I started collecting records when I was about 11 years of age, and I remember I was living out in the country at the time, and I used to get old jukebox singles,” The renowned Australian music journalist and broadcaster said.
“I knew that I was destined to be a collector for life at that time,.”
Since starting his collection it has grown into one of the most extraordinary archives in history.
The collection is particularly rich in LP records, with over 50,000 albums representing the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll and popular music from the latter half of the 20th century.
The auction represents not just a sale but a significant cultural moment.
“We feel honoured to bring the Glenn A Baker iconic collection to auction,” Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions, Lee Hames said.
“It is a collection which represents dedication and passion in the way it was curated. For this reason, it is important to pass the iconic collection onto the next custodians to enjoy but also preserve.”
Baker himself hopes that the collection will find a new home where it will be cared for and appreciated as he has done for decades.
“The Glenn A Baker Archives needs someone who will both care for it and ensure that it would continue on intact to another owner or another generation and continue to be a source of enrichment to everybody who comes near it,” Baker said.
“It deserves to be kept largely intact, itโs really important to me at this stage in my life for it to be maintained at it be continued on in the hands of somebody who actually cares about it. Itโs a collection that deserves to be transformed into a museum.”
The archives will be auctioned on Friday, August 30th, at 7 p.m. You can place a bid or view the auction by visiting lloydsonline.com.au.
