Last night at the Civic Theatre Newcastle, Tex Perkins once again proved himself as one of Australia’s foremost interpreters of the legendary Johnny Cash’s music with a brand new show dedicated to the Man in Black.
Perkins once again demonstrated his deep reverence for Cash’s iconic career with a performance that was both captivating and insightful. The first half of the show delved into Johnny Cash’s early years, providing insight into his upbringing and the eventual union with June Carter. Tex Perkins, with his rich baritone voice, brought these tales to life, while Rachel Tidd’s powerful vocals added an extra layer of depth to the performance. Accompanied by a talented band that included Shane Reilly, Matt Walker, Steve Hadley, and Dave Folley, Perkins seamlessly transported the audience to Cash’s formative years. The setlist featured classics like Ring of Fire, I Walk the Line, Jackson, Get Rhythm, and Cocaine Blues.
In the second half, Tex Perkins and his band explored Johnny Cash’s tumultuous career, from the prison recordings to his decline in popularity and triumphant resurgence under the guidance of producer Rick Rubin. The show maintained its high energy and musical excellence throughout, with standout moments like the rendition of Hurt, which showcased the incredible synergy between Tex Perkins and Rachel Tidd. With Matt Walker and the rest of the band contributing their talents, the audience was treated to an unforgettable night of Cash’s greatest hits, including the timeless Folsom Prison Blues. Tex Perkins – The Man in Black was more than a tribute; it was a living testament to the enduring legacy of Johnny Cash, and a night that Newcastle won’t soon forget.
