Bernard Fanning returned to the Civic Theatre Newcastle on Tuesday, 17 March, delivering a powerful and nostalgic set as part of his Tea & Sympathy 20th Anniversary Tour.
Playing the iconic debut album in full, the former Powderfinger frontman led a packed house through a deeply personal collection of songs that have clearly lost none of their emotional weight two decades on.
From the opening notes, the atmosphere inside the Civic Theatre was equal parts reverent and electric, with fans hanging on every lyric before erupting into full-voice sing-alongs for the albumโs biggest moments.
Backed by much of the original band, Fanning struck a balance between intimate storytelling and soaring, anthemic energy, giving everyone in the room a reminder of why Tea & Sympathy remains one of Australiaโs most enduring records.
Support sets from Sam Cromack and Georgia Mooney set the tone early, adding warmth and charm to an already stacked lineup. Together, the night felt less like a retrospective and more like a celebration, a shared moment between artist and audience that proved these songs still resonate as strongly as ever.
Our mate Juan Mahony was there to capture it all. You can see a gallery of his images below.
