The next generation of Novocastrians is getting hands-on experience in waste minimisation and recycling thanks to a special tour of Summerhill Waste Management Centre designed just for children.
More than eighty-five young attendees participated in free guided visits to the facility, offering a rare glimpse into the daily operations of the city’s landfill and resource recovery facility.
The initiative is part of City of Newcastleโs long-term commitment to sustainability, aiming to reduce unnecessary waste and boost recycling rates by engaging young minds early.
The program fosters awareness of the importance of responsible waste disposal and the environmental impact of everyday habits. Education is at the heart of this approach, ensuring that future generations are well-equipped to make sustainable choices.
During the tour, children explored key areas of the facility, including the Resource Recovery Centre, green waste section, landfill, and even the on-site solar farm.
Interactive activities added an extra layer of engagement, with kids participating in a rubbish sorting game, learning about problem waste like batteries and takeaway coffee cups, and even constructing their own miniature bins. They even got to step inside a real garbage truck and meet its driver!
City of Newcastle is set to continue offering these engaging experiences, which were booked to capacity, ensuring that the next generation of residents remains informed and empowered to make positive environmental changes.
