The Friends of Newcastle Ocean Baths Incorporation (FONOB Inc.) have officially nominated the Newcastle Ocean Baths for inclusion on the State Heritage Register.

The nomination encompasses key features such as the Newcastle Ocean Baths faรงade and portico, the Canoe Pool, and the rock shelf south of the Crowie Hole.

Timely in its submission, the nomination precedes the much-anticipated reopening of the Baths after an extensive two-year closure for essential upgrades.

The Newcastle Ocean Baths, while currently listed on the National Trust Register and within the Newcastle Local Environment Plan, lacks the protective umbrella of the State Heritage Register.

“This nomination is long overdue,” FONOB Inc. President Peter Wickham said.

“Two years have passed since Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cr. Nelmes, promised to nominate the Baths. As advised by Minister Sharpe, that anyone can nominate, we have taken this advice.”

In the submission the incorporation asserts that the Newcastle Ocean Baths complex holds state heritage significance, serving as a testament to the enduring importance and cultural continuity of coastal bathing in the rich tapestry of New South Wales coastal culture.

FONOB Inc.โ€™s nomination was received by Heritage NSW on Wednesday morning.
