Want to hear the latest and greatest music out of Newcastle, Australia? Look no further than More Than Steel & Coal, a new project that aims to showcase and promote Novocastrian music to the world.
Today More Than Steel & Coal announced their first release; an 11-track mixtape featuring some of Newcastle’s hottest bands and greatest songwriters, available on Bandcamp as a free download.
The mixtape is the first release under the More Than Steel & Coal banner, and features the winners of triple j Unearthed’s ThisxThat competition – RAAVE TAPES, as well as brand new recordings from Run Squirrel and Milli Casey. Plus, the latest singles from Lachlan X. Morris, Adeline Pines, and Paper Thin.
The first mixtape features some of the city’s most promising songwritingdriven music. It’s a look into how the a town can shape it’s artists. Newcastle is a city more famously known for its exports and football than its live music scene. This is reflected in the project’s namesake; Safe Hands sing “There’s got to be more than steel and coal” in their song ‘Born In The Last Shower’, which
features on the mixtape.
Speaking about the project, co-ordinator and Newcastle Live contributor, Spencer Scott said “This mixtape is the first release we have planned, and I am very excited to share some of these
artists with the world. More Than Steel & Coal is all about sharing the sounds of my hometown. I think Newcastle is currently in a resurgence of great music,
and I want people to see that”
