The Fort Scratchley Historical Society has issued a statement reminding people that dogs are not welcome on the headland site.
With the exception of assistance dogs, Fort Scratchley has never allowed dogs past the front gate, but a temporary allowance during the recent Sculptures at Scratchley exhibition welcomed all four-legged friends.
“An exception was made for the Sculptures at Scratchley exhibition,” society president Frank Carter said in a statement posted to Facebook.
“However due to the backlash received by our guides since the exhibition closed, that privilege may not be offered for the exhibition next year.”
The society’s decision comes in response to reports of disrespectful behaviour exhibited by some visitors during the exhibition.
Volunteers, who serve as guides at the historical site, said they had endured abuse from members of the public after observing incidents of dogs urinating on Fort buildings and sculptures.
“Our guides are all volunteers and are not expected to take abuse from the general public,” Mr Carter said.
