Virtual reality headsets, 3D printers and high-powered computers for game design and graphics rendering are just some of the tools available at Lake Macquarie’s new digital fabrication laboratory.

The โ€˜Fab Lab, located at the Swansea Centre building, also includes a variety of equipment for digital fabrication prototyping. It will also become a local hub for activities education, idea sharing and collaboration on global challenges.

Opening last Friday, the digital fabrication laboratory, joins a network of more than 1700 similar venues in 100 countries across the globe.

“This is the latest example of how weโ€™re embracing innovation here in Lake Mac,โ€ Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said.

“Itโ€™s the first Fab Lab for regional NSW, and will provide access to the skills, materials and advanced technology to allow anyone to make almost anything they can dream up.”

Other equipment available for use in the lab includes a laser cutter, computer-controlled cutting and engraving machines, a green screen room and vlogging equipment.

The venture was jointly funded by Council and the NSW State Library.

โ€œThis is another way that public libraries can support creative people in local communities, enabling access to the latest technology,โ€ State Librarian John Vallance said.

Access to the Fab Lab will be via public workshops, open days or the ‘Lake Make Club’ membership program. Visit library.lakemac.com.au to find out more about the new Fab Lab.
