It’s back for another year and local birdwatchers in Newcastle are urged to join in.

BirdLife Australia says that The #AussieBirdCount is a great way to connect with the birds and help them find common species that live where people live.

You can count birds in a suburban backyard, a local park, down by the beach, or just by walking up the street. You can count as many times as you like over the week, the organisers just ask that each count is completed over a 20-minute period.

The count kicked off as part of National Bird Week, a tradition that started back in the early 1900s. This period of the year is chosen because it’s when birds are more lively and visible. They begin nesting, breeding and flocking and generally appear more playful.

You can get involved by visiting https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/

You can also check out the live data being uploaded by counters here, and below you can see some of the species of birds already being counted in Newcastle.
