Hold on to your library cards, because Lake Mac Libraries are closing the book on late fees past and present.

Starting today, the libraries will abolish all late fees in a bid to lure back bookworms and invite new users to explore the wonders of their local branches.

And it’s not just a generous olive branch to forgetful borrowers; itโ€™s a strategic move to boost library engagement and attendance.

“Fines are perceived as a barrier to using library services, particularly for lower-income families who are most in need of them,” Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said.

“The abolition of overdue fees will encourage members to return items, increase uptake of library collections and allow staff members to more effectively promote our services.”

The libraryโ€™s new policy means that those pesky late fees haunting your account will vanish into thin airโ€”once you return those overdue items, of course. Itโ€™s a clever way to clear the slate and get people back into the habit of borrowing without the dread of financial punishment hanging over their heads.

But before you start dancing with joy at this newfound freedom, there’s a catchโ€”memberships will be temporarily restricted if you donโ€™t return your borrowed treasures on time. Instead of hitting you where it hurts (your wallet), the library will simply put your borrowing privileges on hold until you bring everything back.

Itโ€™s a pretty fair trade-off, considering the headache and anxiety late fees can cause. The other thing to note is that if you lose or damage a book, youโ€™re still on the hook for replacement costs.
