Clean Up Australia Day 2023 is just around the corner, and there’s never been a more important time to get involved.
With registrations still open for the national event in March, this is your chance to be part of the solution to one of Australia’s most pressing issues – environmental pollution.
According to the Clean Up Australia 2022 National Rubbish Report, plastics continue to be the biggest problem, with 63% of rubbish items removed from parks, schools, bushland, creeks, beaches, and roadways in 2022 being made up of plastic items.
Cigarette butts remain one of the single most collected items, while vapes are also becoming an environmental hazard with no clear guidelines on how to dispose of them.
“Joining in on Clean Up Australia Day is one of the first steps Australians can take to maintain and protect our environment,” Pip Kiernan, Chair of Clean Up Australia said.
“But there are many everyday changes that we can make outside of volunteering our time.
“We can opt for reusable shopping bags and coffee cups, avoid single-use plastics, make purchases with longevity in mind, and actively seek out reusable and recycled packaging. These are small steps we can take where we successfully reduce, reuse, and refuse as often as we can.”
Registrations for the 2023 event are still open, with free clean-up kits available for participants.
The kits include gloves, rubbish and recycle bags, and can be used by individuals or families who want to join an existing Clean Up event or create their own.
If you’re interested in taking part and helping clean up your local area, you can register and get your free kit for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 5 March by visiting cleanup.org.au.
