After catching the matinee performance of Trailer at the Playhouse last week, we dropped into the Civic Digest cafe for a spot of coffee and cake. And, spoiler alert, we weren’t disappointed.
Bringing together cutting edge technology and quality food and beverage services, Civic Digest has quickly become a home base for local cafe lovers. In partnership with the Newcastle Regional Library, the venue provides dinners and coffee drinkers a high quality WiFi connection, digital screens embedded into the tables and apps with library-provided content to entertain and inform you while you’re there.
We’ve been blown away every time we’ve headed into the Digest, and their hot chocolates have become somewhat of an addiction for our office. But, what about the cake, we hear you ask? Well, it’s a tough job but last week we decided to treat ourselves for the benefit of you guys. And we’re here to report that the Civic Digest exceeded our expectations once again.
We fought each other for the last spec of this delicious Caramel Cheesecake. With just the right amount of tart to accompany the rich and delicate caramel, this would please even the fussiest of cake eaters. Presented beautifully with a quinella of cream and ice cream, and topped off with (a very appropriate) toffee star, we’ll be back to give this one another go.
Chocolate Mud Cake
If chocolate is your thing, then you won’t go wrong here. It’s everything you want from a Chocolate Mud Cake. It’s moist, rich, dense, and full of flavour without being too much. Presented with a smear of chocolate ganache, a toffee star and, as before, the winning combo of cream and ice cream (why have one when you can have both?).
The Civic Digest is open from 7:30am Monday to Saturday with late night openings on theatre nights. Bookings for group visits are recommended telephone: 02 4927 8552
