City of Newcastle is once again opening applications for its popular Trainee Lifeguard Program.
The program offers high-school-aged students a chance to gain valuable lifesaving skills while working alongside professional lifeguards.
With over one million beachgoers visiting Newcastleโs stunning coastline each year, the city is committed to bolstering its lifesaving team and ensuring beach safety for both locals and tourists.
This marks the fourth consecutive year of investment in the program, a testament to its success in upskilling local talent.
“Our Trainee Lifeguard Program offers successful applicants an opportunity to shadow City of Newcastle lifeguards who support the community so they can safely enjoy the cityโs beaches and ocean baths,” Executive Manager Community and Recreation, Lynn Duffy said
“The program involves weekday shifts of up to 24 hours per week throughout the summer school holidays and offers invaluable mentorship from our professional lifeguards.”
This yearโs recruitment drive kicks off with a community event at Dixon Park Beach on Friday, 11 October, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Residents and prospective applicants are invited to meet the lifeguards and hear firsthand from the 2024 Australian Open Ironman Champion Dan Collins, who will be sharing his experiences. Past trainees will also be in attendance to discuss how the program has paved the way for their careers in beach safety.
Applications for the 2024 intake close on Sunday, 20 October. To find out more visit newcastle.nsw.gov.au.
