Walkers of all fitness levels will take part in the 2025 Byron Coastal Charity Walk in May raises critical funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

A final call for registrations is now underway for the walk, which stretches along the stunning coastline from Byron Bay to Ballina.

The event offers three distance optionsโ€”12km, 24km, or the full 36kmโ€”making it accessible to both seasoned hikers and casual strollers keen to help keep the helicopters in the air and delivering emergency care across the region.

One of the teams heading to Byron Bay is Bunch of Choppers, led by Mark Stephenson and his 16-year-old son, Cooper. For Mark, the walk is deeply personalโ€”he was rescued by the Westpac helicopter earlier this year after a serious water ski racing accident.

“You never know when you might need the service,” Mark said.

“Itโ€™s a great cause, and they helped me a great deal in my incident. Being able to give back in this way is really special.”

The team has already raised a significant amount through donations from friends, family, and the wider water ski racing community.

But for Mark, itโ€™s not just about moneyโ€”itโ€™s about ensuring the service is available for others in their time of need.

“When I was in hospital, the support was overwhelming,” he said.

“Now itโ€™s our turn to support others.”

Byron Coastal Charity Walk is happening on 3 May 2025. With just weeks left, organisers hope more people will step up and register. Visit rescuehelicopter.com.au to find out more.
