Newcastle’s vibrant streets have long been a hub for live music, but for local musician Nemo, which means ‘nothing’ in Latin, they serve as more than just a stage.

Having spent much of his life in Maitland and Newcastle, Nemo has embraced the city’s nightlife and culture, blending his passion for music with a mission to support those in need.

His time in the city is spent playing on the streets and engaging in street missionary work, particularly focused on assisting the homeless and working with organisations like the Wesley Mission, The Hub, and Orange Sky.

Performing in public spaces offers Nemo a rare and powerful connection with audiences that digital platforms often lack. In an era dominated by streaming and online engagement, he finds value in personal interactions.

For Nemo, music is a tool for healing, outreach, and building community. The philosophy behind his busking is simple: whatever earnings he makes are not his alone but meant to be shared.

As part of his recovery, he picked up the guitar, discovering a newfound ability to express himself through songwriting. His first song, River Song, was a poem he had written at 17, which he later set to music.

At the end of last year, Nemo released his album The Gospel According to Nemo, featuring eight original tracks recorded by just him and his guitar.

His commitment to social advocacy extends beyond Newcastle. Over the past year, he has travelled through 39 towns and cities along the East Coast, investigating the availability of support services for the homeless.

All proceeds from album sales are directed toward Orange Sky, a volunteer-run organisation providing free laundry and shower services for people experiencing homelessness. You can check out our interview with Nemo below and the first of his Warehouse Sessions here.
