Newcastle music royalty, Brien McVernon will head to the Wickham Park Hotel with his son Phoenix for a special gig on Saturday, 26 August. The gig will see the duo play a number of songs they wrote on a recent overseas trip they dubbed “The 10 Day Song Challenge”.
The 10 Day Song Challenge was an idea Newcastle singer-songwriter Brien McVernon came up with. The concept was to fly to a destination with his son Phoenix that neither had been to before
and write a new song, record it and make a video to post on Facebook every day for 10 days for people to follow the journey. The destination Brien chose was South East Asia, Vietnam and Cambodia to be exact.
The only commitments made were to make their way to the memorial at the past battlefield of Long Tan and Nui Dat, significant to the Australian soldiers that fought in the Vietnam war. Another was to reach Angkor Wat and The Killing Fields of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Each day was bound to be full of new experiences, highlighted by the father-son relationship and putting the daily feelings and thoughts into song.
The show at The Wicko will be the first live playing of the 10 Day Song Challenge and the show will include the sharing of the back stories to each song along with showing film and photos of each day.
Joining Brien and Phoenix at the Wicko will be the amazingly talented Scottie Chapman on electronic stuff.
This will be the final Challenge to this story.
The show is happening at The Wickham Park Hotel in the Beer Garden from 11:30 pm on Saturday, 26 August.
