Community groups, charities and non-government organisations contributing tot he health and wellbeing of Novocastrians during the COVID-19 pandemic are being given a much-needed boost by Newcastle Council.

The City of Newcastle has opened applications for its Boost Our City Community Sector Grants which will offer funding of up to $30,000 for eligible groups who provide practical support to those that need it most.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the effects of the pandemic will be ‘far-reaching and felt for some time to come.’

She added that the grants program would enable these groups to develop innovative solutions to challenges the pandemic has presented the most vulnerable and at-risk in the community.

“The aim of ourย communityย grantsย program is to scale and fit the needs identified by theย communityย sector toย softenย the social impact of COVID-19,” she said.ย

โ€œIt could make all the difference,ย for instance, to someone with complex health needs but limited access to technology to ensure continuity ofย care, or to someone who has lost their job or is struggling with mentalย healthย and turns to a charity or service provider for the first time.ย “

Grantsย of betweenย $2,000 and $30,000ย are availableย forย projects that complyย with Federal Government guidelines and NSW Health advice regarding COVID-19.ย

The total grant pool is $550,000 and is aimed at helping service providers cope with increased urgency and demand, such as the provision of support services, supported living, crisis support, welfare, and community transport.

The grants program forms part of council’s $5.5million COVID-19 response package which was announced in March.

Applications are open untilย Tuesday 30 June. Head here for more information and to apply.
