The creative powerhouse behind last year’s theatrical hit, Spewy, will return to the stage with Blueberry Play this August.
A poignant production by acclaimed Novocastrian playwright Ang Collins, Blueberry Play will hit the Civic Theatre Playhouse as part of the city’s UpStage program – An initiative that aims to spotlight emerging talents and innovative works.
Diving into the tumultuous life of a 17-year-old girl grappling with the complexities of adolescence and the added burden of caring for her ill father, the play promises a rich, intimate exploration of youth, highlighted by the fatherโs peculiar habit of attempting to shave his eyebrows off.
Through its vivid monologue format, the production offers a raw and heartfelt look at the rollercoaster of teenage life in a small Australian town.
Set against familiar backdrops such as the public pool and school locker rooms, Blueberry Play captures the essence of the highs and lows that define the teenage experience.
This coming-of-age story is infused with a unique Australian flavour, providing a refreshing twist on the genre. It delves into the protagonist’s world where home life is chaotic, yet poignantly relatable, resonating with anyone who has navigated the choppy waters of growing up.
To mark the playโs premiere, an exclusive Q&A session with playwright Ang Collins will follow the opening night performance, offering theatregoers a rare glimpse into the creative process behind this moving work. Additionally, attendees can enjoy a special $5 discount per person on opening night, making it an event not to be missed for both seasoned theatre enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Blueberry Play will be performed at the Playhouse in Civic Theatre Newcastle, with sessions scheduled from Wednesday, August 14th to Saturday, August 17th. Evening performances begin at 7 pm, with an additional matinee on Friday, August 16th at 11 am. For more information visit civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.
