Australian rocker, Alex Lahey plays the Sydney Junction Hotel on September 24. If you follow any music media it would have been hard to miss all the hype that surrounded her performances at BIGSOUND last week.
The national music conference held every September in Brisbane gives new artists a platform to showcase their talents to rooms full of booking agents, managers, labels and associated industry peeps. Newcastle Live were on the ground for the event and saw Alex play twice to packed rooms and let’s just say, all that hype she’s getting, it’s totally justified.
> The band is tight!
Both times we saw Alex play, we couldn’t believe how super tight her band was. Every intro is nailed, especially for the catchy You Don’t Think You Like People Like Me.
> Alex Rocks
There’s no shoegazing going on here. Alex puts on one hell of a show. Chatting with the audience, throwing her guitar around, encouraging everyone to get “LIT AF”, and generally having a great time. It’s entertaining to watch and draws you into the songs.
> It’s all killer no filler
If you listen to Triple J you’re probably familiar with the songs You Don’t Think You Like People Like Me and Let’s Go Out. But we came away from each of the gigs we last week with Ivy League and Wes Anderson stuck in our heads. Basically, it’s all killer, no filler here.
> You can see her in Newcastle on September 24

ABOUT: Alex Lahey
Alex Lahey hocked her beloved 1999 blue Corolla to pay for the recording of her debut EP. First single out of the boot was last yearโs Air Mail, introducing the airwaves to the Melbourne-based singer-songwriterโs knack for melodic, guitar-driven hooks.
Most recently Lahey has set the music industry abuzz with the insanely catchy You Donโt Think You Like People Like Me. From the attention-grabbing opening bars (those drums sound like an angry landlord thumping your front door on a Sunday morning), it flips the classic break-up line โitโs not you, itโs meโ on its head. Upon release in March, Peopleโฆ was immediately added to rotation on triple j, triple j unearthed, Syn FM and FBi FM, and started popping up on music blogs everywhere. It was then Pitchfork gave it Best New Track and got the rest of the world talking.
A founding member of avant poppers Animaux, multi-instrumentalist Lahey has now gone solo and pared down her sound, embracing a simple, home-spun story-telling style thatโs often underlined by her second love, the fuzz pedal.
Along with her new three-piece band and producer Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Ali Barter), Lahey is set to release her debut EP later in 2016 – bound to be the yearโs greatest Corolla-funded release.
