Bernie’s Bar is calling on Novocastrians to help celebrate a major milestone in the city’s history, 100 years of The Star Hotel.
The venue is putting together a collection of photos from across the decades, capturing the many lives of the iconic establishment, including its time as Screaming Mimi’s. The folks at Bernie’s hope to showcase the rich history of The Star through a nostalgic visual journey at the upcoming centenary event.
Whether it’s pictures of The Star’s infamous live gigs, its ever-changing facade, or candid shots of nights out with friends, all contributions are welcome. The collection will celebrate not only the building itself but also the community that has kept it alive for a century.
In addition to a slideshow display on-site, Bernie’s Bar is exploring an interactive element using augmented reality (AR). The idea is to allow visitors to scan a QR code and use their phones to overlay historical images onto the present-day venue, offering a unique glimpse into how The Star has evolved over time.
For many in Newcastle, The Star Hotel holds a special place in music and cultural history. Its legacy includes the famous 1979 riot, a moment cemented in the city’s folklore, and decades of live music that have shaped its reputation as a hub for entertainment. Collecting these images will not only pay tribute to those memories but also ensure they are preserved for future generations to appreciate.
Anyone with photos to contribute can reach out to Bernie’s Bar on Facebook or Instagram to have them included in the event.
