Monkey Baa Theatre Company’s production of Josephine Wants to Dance is set to charm audiences at the Civic Theatre in August.
Based on the popular children’s book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley, the uplifting stage show celebrates the joy of dancing, the power of perseverance, and a kangaroo who dares to dream beyond the bounds of what’s expected.
Josephine isn’t like other kangaroos in Shaggy Gully. While her brother Joey insists kangaroos are only meant to hop, she has bigger aspirations—leaping, twirling, and pirouetting through the bush in pursuit of ballet stardom. When a ballet company visits town and the lead dancer is injured, Josephine sees her big chance to shine. What unfolds is a heartwarming and hilarious tale perfect for young audiences and families alike.
Since its debut in 2018, Josephine Wants to Dance has received critical acclaim, including a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Production for Children. It’s a lively musical adaptation that features original music, a blend of ballet and hip-hop, and an ensemble of Australian animal characters brought to life with humour and heart.
Helmed by acclaimed director Jonathan Biggins, the production brings together an exceptional creative team including composer Phil Scott, choreographer Tim Harbour, designer James Browne, and lighting designer Emma Lockhart-Wilson.
Josephine Wants to Dance will take over the Civic Theatre Newcastle on Friday, 8 August and Saturday, 9 August. Tickets are on sale now. Visit civictheatrenewcastle.com.au for more info.
