Lake Macquarie City Council is taking steps to preserve the cherished heritage of Awaba House.

The iconic building in Booragul suffered extensive damage from a fire incident in 2019, and now the Council aims to restore the building’s significant features while infusing it with new energy through the addition of a restaurant and function space.

Council is now calling for tenders with construction slated to commence later this year and a targeted completion date set for late 2024.

“Weโ€™re looking forward to working with the successful contractor to restore Awaba House to its former glory, and welcome dining and events back to the revitalised space,” Manager Property Business Development Elizabeth Lambert said.

“Itโ€™s important that we respect and retain the buildingโ€™s heritage elements while reinvigorating the space for a diverse and contemporary offering to the community.”

Following extensive community engagement in 2020, the Council has formulated plans to maintain the building’s key heritage elements, ensuring their preservation for future generations to enjoy.

Once the rebuild is complete, the establishment is expected to be a draw card for locals looking for a space with an enchanting ambience on the picturesque shores of Lake Macquarie.

Tender submissions close on Thursday 10 August 2023. To download the tender package, visit lakemac.com.au.
