There’s a real groundswell at the moment behind calls for broadcasters, retailers and business owners to play more Australian music.

Australian singer-songwriter and producer Jack River really got the ball rolling when calling on Channel 7 to use locally produced music during their Olympics coverage. Jack’s Instagram post was shared widely by other Aussie artists and the broader music community which sparked the Our Soundtrack Our Stories campaign lead by the Australian Recording Industry Association.

And now there’s an online petition urging big businesses to play and pay for Aussie music instead of using annoying repetitive loops of licence-free music.

The idea came to entertainment industry publicist Karen Eck when she was left on hold for 7 hours and 19 minutes listening to the same 15-second piece of music on repeat.

And we don’t know about you, but if we’re waiting on the phone for hours to speak with a customer service agent we’d rather hear some fresh, or classic, Aussie music than having to sit through the mind-numbing pan flute solos and elevator style classical music that dominate the on-hold music landscape.
