Why You Should Attend This Is Not Art 2017

Being typically Novocastrian means a lot of things, to a lot of different people. Some think of ’97, some think of steel and coal, some our amazing and wonderful beaches and perfect small town/big city balance, but what about the art and creative community? And what about the art and creative community that seems to be oh so alive and well in this town of ours? Creatives aren’t usually the type to want to commit to publicising the things they are doing either. They tend to keep quiet in dark corners, creating things, and hoping no one notices. But when all of these creatives come together, man does that make for one hell of a party. Thankfully, September is the month to party, with so many amazing and wonderful things happening for everyone and anyone who considers themselves, a lover of creative things. Last week, the good folks at This Is Not Art (TiNA) launched the official program for the event and it’s an absolute cracker. TiNA also incorporates the National Young Writers Festival (NYWF) and if that’s not a good enough reason to attend the four day extravaganza (28th September – 1st October) than here’s five more.

1.There are over 150 events across four days

It doesn’t take a maths genius to work out that 150 different events across four days, is a lot of culture to take in and get excited about. Whatever you’re into, there is something in this program that’s tailored just for you. Best of all? The majority of the events are f-r-e-e. So whether you want to learn, meet, feast your eyes, party, be wowed or anything in between, there is something on this program for you.

2. You will get to see, hear, feel, experience something out of your normal day to day.

Art exhibition? Dance Theatre Workshop? Business Class? Zines? Activism? Whatever your jam, now’s your chance to get involved, get around it, and get creating and experiencing. There is no better time, or better excuse like the present to dive head first into some culture, or start a new hobby you’ve been harbouring for many months. You do you after all.

3. This is the time to finally visit that art gallery/museum/park/pub that you’ve always needed an excuse to attend.

Did you know that we have a Museum, a library, and an art gallery? We also have some of the coolest, hip hop and happening venues that any cultural creative could ask for, and they are all right here on our doorstep. So now’s your chance friend, go and visit all of those amazing venues and feast your eyes and ears on something truly spectacular.

4. It’s a chance for you to be proud of the city you live in!

If you take a second to look outside our social media circle, and see what the tourists are saying about TiNA, you’d be oh so surprised. During this weekend in September, the creative community will literally flock to our fair city, just to be a part of the event that we are hosting. Now that’s something worth celebrating. It’s a chance to see the city through the eyes of a tourist as well! Meet some kewl new people, talk about some kewl new things, and have a really wholesome good time.

5. You can finally push outside your comfort zone.

Do you have some words tucked away that you’ve always wanted to share with the world? Keen to put on a performance but didn’t think there would ever be an opportunity? Think again friends because during the TiNA/NYWF weekend there are two open mic events and they are calling your name! The first being on the Thursday evening at the Royal Exchange Hotel from 8pm. I’ve previously met with the organisers of the event and let me tell you, there are no rules! It’s an anti-slam after all. Oh and p.s, there’s no such thing as bad poetry in a welcoming community.
