Lake Macquarie will come alive in a flash of illuminated brilliance later this month when the popular Float Your Boat festival kicks off.
The event will see a flotilla of colourfully it and themed boats make their way along the western side of the lake on Friday 28 June from 6pm to 9 pm, before cruising the eastern side on Saturday 29 June, again from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Also, there will be cash prizes on offer for creative ‘boaties’ including a $2000 people’s choice award, a $1000 Mayor’s Best Boat Award for crafts 10 metres and over and five metres and over.
After a massive event in 2018, that saw an estimated 17,000 spectators get in on the action, Lake Macquarie Council’s arts, culture, and tourism manager Jacqui Hemsley said she was hopeful of an even bigger event in 2019.
“Last year we had more than 24 boats lit up as a mermaid, dolphins, turtles and even the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars,” she said.
“This year we want to see bigger and even more extravagant illumination displays and onshore performances.”
Ms Hemsley added that Council were keen to hear from local boaties who own a craft over five meters in length who are keen to flaunt their creativity and sense of fun by dressing up their boats.
“We’re calling on our boating community to join us to have some fun, dress up their boats with lights and take part in this fantastic event,” she said.
Applications are now open and registration is free.
