“All originals, all night”.
That’s what DJ Tone promises this Friday night at The Cat’s Pajamas, the Prince Of Wales Hotel’s new pop-up bar.
Arguably the music of the 90s has been embraced a lot quicker than it took for the sounds of the 80s to be recognised for their genius. DJ Tone says that’s down to it’s unique sound.
“Clearly this music had its influences, everything from Bob Dylan to the Stooges but I think the reason why the 90s alt/indie stuff was so unique is that it lived in the moment, raw and unashamed. Crossing over to the pop scene was never a thought as the pop music machine was eating itself alive, the New Romantics had lost, Stock, Aitkin and Waterman had won and left us cringing in the aftermath to the Backstreet Boys, Aqua and the Spice Girls, the perfect vacuum for counterculture to become culture. This was music that would never do a Bono-esque duet with Pavarotti or a Metallica style Symphony Orchestra LP, it serves itself, always”
The Cat’s Pajamas pop-up has quickly earned itself the reputation of the “place to be” since it’s opening last month.
“I think this room will become one of the more interesting spaces in Newcastle, for both the space itself, and the people behind it. Having a history with Ty (the publican) I’ve seen him both nurture local things and bring interesting things into Newcastle” Tone says.
And what’s it like to DJ behind The Cat’s Pajamas’ piano desk?
“I’ll be trying to channel more the Warren Zevon spirit than the Liberace! It’s almost ironic to be pumping out such raw sound from an instrument of precision and beauty” .
DJ Tone will be joined by DJs Coffee and Tinman.
