With ANZAC Day just around the corner, there are a plethora of venues throughout the region that are taking the day to remember the sacrifice of our fallen servicemen and women.
Below is a quick guide to where you can share a quiet drink and indulge in the time-honoured ANZAC Day tradition of Two-Up.
1.The Great Northern Hotel
83-89 Scott St Newcastle
The Great Northern will be giving thanks to our servicemen and women, past, present and future by throwing open its doors at 6am, offering fresh bacon and egg rolls, coffee and perhaps even an early morning beer.
The commemoration will continue throughout the day with two-up in the foyer, live music and both NRL clashes playing live and loud in the sports bar.
As a further thanks to our armed forces, the pub will be donating $1 from every Tooheys New and Tooheys Old purchased on the day to Legacy – a charity that offers help to families suffering the loss of a loved one during service.
2. Souths Merewether
46 Llewellyn St, Merewether
Souths will be kicking off its ANZAC Day commemorations from 7am when it hosts the Merewether-Hamilton-Adamstown RSL Sub Branch for breakfast, following their respective dawn services.
Souths also offers multiple, open entertainment areas to suit all ages – whether you want to try your luck at Two-Up (starts 12 noon), listen to Aussie classics on Crowd DJ or watch the footy or races.

3. The Greenroof
71 Tudor St, Hamilton
The Greenroof will be celebrating the spirit of ANZAC from 10am with Newcastle’s biggest Two-Up ring in the carpark from 11am to 3pm with the spinner’s cut being donated to Legacy. Also, tinnies are just $5 while the coin is in the air and live music will be provided by DJ Jaytehazard and Jerome O’Connor.
To further honour or defence force, the venue will also be offering drink vouchers for servicemen and women in uniform that will be available on the door.
4. ANZAC Day Races
Racecourse Road, Cessnock
Cessnock Racecourse will also commemorate the occasion with the annual ANZAC Day races.
Aside from the racing action, the event will also celebrate the contributions of horses during various theatres of war but featuring a special Lighthorse re-enactment and ceremony.
The day will also feature Two-Up, food vendors, a jumping castle and face painting for the kids and live music.

5. Criterion Hotel
81 Bourke St, Carrington
After paying your respects at an ANZAC day dawn service why not head over to the Criterion in Carrington?
From 6.30am the venue will be serving up Anzac biscuits, Fireball and milk and bacon and egg rolls. The veggos are also well catered for with hash and egg rolls.
