Suzie Miller and Andrew O’Hagan are heading to Newcastle this October for two special Newcastle Writers Festival events, bringing acclaimed new works and big questions about power, privilege, family and contemporary society.
Internationally acclaimed Australian/British writer and playwright Suzie Miller will appear at Newcastle Theatre Company on 1 October to discuss her latest novel, Inter Alia.
The event will explore Miller’s career across theatre, literature and law, as well as the ideas and experiences that have shaped her work.
Following the success of her debut novel Prima Facie, which was adapted from her hit solo play and translated into 10 languages, Miller’s Inter Alia turns its attention to an eminent High Court judge forced to confront the realities of her professional and personal life after a devastating crisis.
The intimate and provocative novel tackles modern masculinity, family, privilege and accountability.
Miller will be joined in conversation by Rosemarie Milsom, director of Adelaide Writers’ Week and founding director of Newcastle Writers Festival.
The evening will delve into the urgent social questions behind Miller’s writing and the themes of power, privilege and complicity that run through Inter Alia.
Then on 14 October, Booker Prize nominee Andrew O’Hagan will take to Newcastle Library for an evening exploring his extraordinary writing career and latest novel, Caledonian Road.
The Sunday Times bestseller follows art historian Campbell Flynn through a London shaped by immense wealth, social division, political intrigue and moral uncertainty, offering a sharp look at a society at a crossroads.
An Evening with Suzie Miller will take place on Thursday 1 October at Newcastle Theatre Company. An Evening with Andrew O’Hagan will be held on Wednesday 14 October at Newcastle Library. Both events form part of the Newcastle Writers Festival Spring Program, which runs across September and October.
