Bushfires. Global pandemics. Economic recessions. Toilet paper shortages. The threat of murder hornets. It’s by no means an overreach to say that despite the fact that we are only halfway through, as far as years go, 2020 has been an absolute pile of hot garbage.
However, through all the confusion, worry and uncertainty, one thing has remained constant. That Newcastle’s music community has continued to produce some kick ass tunes.
In a nutshell, when it comes to quality original local music, Newcastle has proved, yet again that it is one of the most fecund, eclectic and downright exciting ‘scenes’ in this wide brown land we call Australia.
In fact, anyone complaining that music was “heaps better” in their day, might do well to lift the needle off that record and actually check out some of the amazing talent we have in this part of the world.
To that end we thought we would punctuate the half yearly mark of 2020 with some of our favourite tunes from Newcastle artists that have dropped this year and boy what an eclectic year it’s been 0 and it’s only JUNE!
From the angular mayhem of The Med Heads Mystery and the power-pop urgency of Dave The Band’s Get Smart, and the raw emotion of Grace Turner’s Half Light, to the sombre barroom vibe of Glovers Lane’s Lonely On Your Own, the punk rock and roll viscera of Mucho Sonar’s Bring Back The Venue and the stadium rock swagger of Hot Flush’s Rock Attack, it’s been a bloody good six months in Newcastle for great music.
So, without further ado, check out our Best Of Newy 2020…So Far playlist but it’s by no means exhaustive so if you’ve got a suggestion for a Novo banger let us know!
Happy listening, Newy!
